Filter degradation is the most immediate hidden cost. Budget HEPA filters use lower-density media that loads with particulate faster and degrades its capture efficiency before the replacement indicator triggers. Manufacturers set replacement intervals by calendar, not by measured performance — so you may be running a filter at 60% efficacy for weeks before the light tells you otherwise. Activated carbon is where budget units cut corners most aggressively. Someone who's thought about insulation, about VOCs from new furniture and renovation materials, about what the air in a well-sealed modern home actually contains and what it does over time. Someone who has, perhaps, an allergy sufferer in the household, or a newborn, or simply an understanding that respiratory exposure is cumulative and that the quality of the air you breathe every night while sleeping is not a trivial variable. Check noise specifications across all fan speeds. A manufacturer confident in their acoustic engineering will publish decibel ratings at low, medium, and maximum speeds. A single maximum-speed figure tells you very little about how the unit performs in the setting you'll actually use it — which, in a bedroom or living room, is almost certainly not maximum. Units rated below 30dB at low speed are genuinely quiet. Units that publish only one figure probably aren't.

Assess the warranty as a proxy for build confidence. A two-year warranty is a minimum expectation. Five years or more, with accessible UK-based support and independently available replacement parts, signals a manufacturer who expects their product to still be running at year four and has engineered accordingly. Read the small print — some warranties exclude specific components, which tells you where the manufacturer expects failure to occur.

Look for brands that show their engineering. Internal schematics, filter layering diagrams, and airflow pathway illustrations are typically made visible because they're part of the value — not concealed behind branding language. A manufacturer confident in how their product is built tends to show you exactly how it's built. One that isn't tends to lead with lifestyle photography and descriptors like "advanced" or "intelligent" without explaining what either means.

Evaluate the product page for what it doesn't say. A well-engineered product has a lot of genuine specification to communicate. Product pages that are light on technical detail are often structured that way because the technical detail isn't favourable.
